Markdown

Options

HTML found in your Markdown is escaped and shown as text. Switch that off only for documents you wrote yourself: raw HTML in a Markdown file is how cross-site scripting gets into a published page. The preview below strips scripts and event handlers either way, so what you see there is safer than what a real site would render.

How this converter behaves

Markdown has no single authority. CommonMark settled most of the ambiguity in the original 2004 description, GitHub then added tables, strikethrough and task lists on top, and every other renderer sits somewhere between the two. This page follows CommonMark for the constructs below and adds the GitHub table syntax, because that is what people actually paste in.

Supported

ATX and underlined headings, paragraphs, hard line breaks from a trailing backslash or two spaces, emphasis and strong emphasis with both markers, strikethrough, inline code and fenced code blocks with a language label, ordered and unordered lists nested to any depth, blockquotes, horizontal rules, inline links, autolinks, images, backslash escapes, and pipe tables with per-column alignment.

Not supported

Reference-style links and footnotes, definition lists, math, and syntax highlighting inside code blocks. Indented (four-space) code blocks are read as ordinary text, since in practice they collide with list indentation far more often than they are wanted. If your document leans on any of these, the output will be wrong in a way you can see rather than a way you cannot.

Why HTML is escaped

A Markdown file is allowed to contain HTML, and most converters pass it through untouched. That is fine for a document you wrote and dangerous for one you received: a single <img onerror=...> in a README becomes script execution on whatever page renders it. Escaping is the default here. The checkbox turns it off for the HTML output, but the preview on this page still drops scripts, frames and event-handler attributes, because the preview runs inside your own session.

About the Word and PDF exports

The PDF route is the browser's own print dialogue, applied to a clean copy of your document in a new tab. Choose "Save as PDF" as the destination. There is no PDF engine on this page, and a hand-rolled one would produce worse text than the printer already does.

The Word export writes a real .docx package by hand: headings, bold, italic, strikethrough, monospaced code, blockquotes, tables and paragraphs all arrive as proper Word content. Two honest gaps. Lists become indented paragraphs with a literal bullet or number, because real Word numbering needs a definitions part that would double the size of the writer for little gain. Links are written as the link text followed by the address in brackets rather than as clickable fields, and images are dropped with their alt text left in place.
