Fit vs Crop for product images

Both methods create consistent dimensions, but they make a different promise about what stays visible. Choose the method before processing a complete catalogue.

From guidance to a reviewable result

Use the method when it fits. Use the tool when repetition begins.

Compare Fit and Crop outputs

Fit keeps the complete source visible

Fit scales the source until its full width and height are inside the requested canvas. If the source and output have different aspect ratios, the unused area becomes padding. A square marketplace file made from a portrait product photo therefore gains space on the left and right; a landscape photo gains space above and below.

Fit is the safer default when cutting off part of the product would be unacceptable. The padding can be white, another confirmed colour or transparent when the output format supports transparency.

Crop fills every output pixel

Crop scales the source until the requested canvas is completely covered, then removes the area outside the canvas. It creates an edge-to-edge result without padding, but part of the source may disappear. A focus point helps decide which area stays in view; it does not automatically detect the product.

Neither method should stretch an image

Changing width and height independently distorts the product. A correct batch workflow preserves the original aspect ratio, then either pads or crops. Check the first few results at full size before applying the same choice to a large catalogue.

What to review before export

  • Does the complete product remain visible, including handles, shadows and packaging?
  • Is a white background appropriate, or does transparency need PNG, WebP or AVIF?
  • Are small source images being enlarged? Upscaling should be an explicit choice.
  • Does every variant use the intended dimensions, format and filename pattern?
  • Do marketplace content rules require more than dimensions and background?

Dimensions alone never guarantee marketplace approval. Product placement, prohibited overlays, image content and category-specific rules still need review.
