Screen readers cannot reliably determine reading order or document structure. Rebuild this in the source authoring tool.
Human repair required · not auto-fixedAssistive technology cannot select the correct pronunciation rules.
A person must describe the purpose of each figure before the existing tags can be updated.
Meaning requires human inputLanguage metadata now passes. Structural and meaning-based findings remain visible.
Preflight first, repair only with evidence
A short path from PDF to a realistic worklist
- Add one PDF.Choose PDF/UA-1 or PDF/UA-2. Password-protected, damaged and active portfolio files are blocked.
- Run deterministic checks.Pinned veraPDF and local inspection check machine-verifiable structure, metadata, figures, forms and document behaviour.
- Review by impact and page.Every finding explains the barrier, affected users, evidence and recommended next action.
- Confirm only safe changes.Metadata and values attached to existing tags can be edited. Reading order, tag trees, table semantics and alternative-text meaning are never guessed.
- Revalidate the separate copy. The optional guided-fixed PDF is checked again with the same pinned profile. The ZIP then verifies every member against its byte size and SHA-256 manifest record.
Manual review stays separate
Logical reading order, meaningful alternative text, heading hierarchy, table interpretation, link purpose and keyboard behaviour require a person. They never inflate the automated score.
Does this certify that a PDF is accessible?
No. It reports machine-verifiable checks and a separate manual-review list. Human review is still required.
Can the tool create a missing tag tree?
No. It never invents reading order, headings, tables or a tag tree. Those structural repairs require an authoring tool and human judgment.
Which fixes can be applied?
Only explicitly confirmed document title, language, display-title preference, tab order for an existing tag tree, bookmarks, figure alternative text on existing Figure tags and tooltips on existing form fields.
What happens to signed PDFs?
Signed PDFs are report-only, because any edit would invalidate the signature. You receive the findings without a modified file.
What is included in the result package?
Accessible HTML, a separately validated PDF/UA executive summary, a protected CSV, technical JSON, a manifest and the optional guided-fixed PDF.
