Removing location and device tags from a video

What you bring

You bring one video per job as MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV. Phones and cameras often write GPS position, device model and descriptive tags into the file. Before anything is rewritten, you see which location, device and descriptive tags your file holds, so you know what you are removing. A file in another format is refused before the job starts.

What you get back

You get the cleaned video and a before and after list of the metadata. The list keeps four groups apart: inspected, removed, kept and unknown. Picture and sound are copied into a new container without re-encoding. The report includes a fingerprint of the media streams before and after, a short code that only matches if the picture and sound are identical. That match is what shows they were not changed.

Removal settings and what cannot be promised

You choose the privacy fields only, every removable tag, or your own comma-separated list of field names. Chapter markers are removed unless you tick keep chapters, since chapter titles often hold names and places. Some containers hold vendor-specific data whose contents are not documented. Those parts are listed as unknown, not counted as removed. So the report never promises that every trace is gone. Before you share a sensitive video, read the unknown list yourself.

Questions before you run it

Which metadata is removed?

You choose: the privacy fields only, every removable tag, or a custom list of field names. Location, device and descriptive tags are shown to you before the rewrite so the decision is informed.

Is the picture re-encoded when tags are stripped?

No. The elementary streams are copied into a fresh container. Hashes of those streams before and after are in the report, which is what backs the claim that the picture is untouched.

Can you promise every trace of private data is gone?

No, and the report says so plainly. Containers can hold vendor-specific atoms whose contents are undocumented, and those are listed as unknown rather than counted as removed.

Do chapter markers survive the clean?

Only if you tick keep chapters. Otherwise they go with the rest of the container metadata, since chapter titles often carry names and places.

Which containers are accepted?

MP4, MOV, WEBM and MKV, one file per job.
